Teeth whitening has become increasingly popular as people seek brighter, more confident smiles. Before we begin, it's important to understand the two main types of whitening gels and the general of teeth whitening process :

Hydrogen Peroxide: The hydrogen peroxide gel is applied directly to the teeth. As more stain molecules are broken down, the overall appearance of the tooth becomes lighter and brighter. Hydrogen peroxide can affect both extrinsic (surface) stains caused by foods, drinks, and smoking, and intrinsic (internal) stains resulting from aging, medications, or trauma. It occurs gradually as the hydrogen peroxide continues to work, which is why treatments often last 60-90 minutes session and may be repeated over several days or weeks. Hydrogen peroxide gel is recommended for people that have a lot of stains from foods, coffee ,tea, wine and heavy smoker.

Carbamide Peroxide: This is a slower-acting compound that breaks down into hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide typically remains active for longer than hydrogen peroxide.  Many people find that carbamide peroxide causes less tooth sensitivity compared to equivalent concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, likely due to its slower release. Carbamide peroxide gel is used for people that have sensitive teeth. And it recommends teeth whitening for a 30-45 minutes session.

Gum protection: Apply a gingival barrier for teeth whitening, which is commonly used to protect the gums during the whitening process. This is crucial to prevent irritation and sensitivity. After the whitening process, the barrier is gently peeled off. Any residue is usually easily cleaned away. 

Treatment time: Remineralization gel is a topical treatment containing minerals essential for tooth health, primarily calcium and phosphate. Some gels also include fluoride. These minerals are the building blocks of tooth enamel, the hard, protective outer layer of teeth. apply it to your teeth for 5 minutes after the teeth whitening treatment.

After treatment: Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or brush your teeth gently. Avoid eating or drinking anything that could stain your teeth for 10-12 hours after treatment. Drinking lots of water after the treatment.

People who have veneers generally should not do teeth whitening, at least not in the traditional sense:

Veneers are made of porcelain or composite material that doesn't respond to whitening agents like natural teeth do. The color of veneers is fixed when they're manufactured and bonded to the teeth. Uneven results If you whiten your natural teeth, they may become brighter than your veneers, leading to a mismatched appearance. Your veneers might end up looking darker or more yellow in comparison to your newly whitened natural teeth. Potential damage some whitening agents can be abrasive or contain chemicals that might affect the surface of veneers over time, potentially shortening their lifespan or altering their appearance. Sensitivity issues while veneers themselves won't become sensitive, the teeth underneath or adjacent natural teeth might experience increased sensitivity from whitening treatments. If you have veneers and are unhappy with the color of your smile, the best course of action is to consult with a cosmetic dentist.
